“Arise! Awake! And stop not until the goal is reached.”

Swami Vivekananda played a sublime role in the spiritual enlightenment of the Indian populace, for extensive spreading Vedanta philosophy in the West and founding the Ramakrishna Mission in the service of poor.

The eminently adored and respected Hindu monk of the modern era, Swami Vivekananda spread the idea of humanity and brotherhood amongst humans, called for international integrity through spiritual upliftment and became the spiritual guide for an entire nation and even beyond.

National Youth Day is revered every year on January 12 since 1985 in the honour of Swamiji. The government sensed that the philosophy and ideals of Vivekananda are a source of great awakening and insight for Indian youth so his birthday is observed as National Youth Day.

Vivekananda was born and raised in Kolkata and was formerly called Narendra Nath Datta. He attained the name, Swami Vivekananda, after he became a monk. Swamiji was always captivated by philosophy and spirituality.

At the outset of youth, Vivekananda passed through a stage of spiritual dilemma as he was confused by scepticism about the reality and presence of God.
During this time, he met his guru and mentor Sri Ramakrishna, and right away enquired him : “Sir, have you seen God?” Without a moment’s mistrust, Sri Ramakrishna answered, “Yes, I have. I see Him as clearly as I see you, only in a much intense sense.”

After clearing doubts from Vivekananda’s mind, Sri Ramakrishna won him over and then commenced their guru-disciple relationship. Vivekananda learned about Hinduism, read Vedas and pursued every progressive idea around the world. His knowledge of the world amplified as he could relate spirituality with humanity. After Sri Ramakrishna’s death, Swamiji became the prime disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and founded Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. Vivekananda dedicated his life to the nation and pursued for the upliftment of the underprivileged, the helpless and the poor. Swamiji was the first religious leader in country to figure out and openly declare that the real reason of India’s deterioration was the indiffrence of the masses. He displayed a beacon of light to a nation whose belief in his ability had vanished under the British rule and instilled self-assurance and inner strength among Indians, who Swami Vivekananda believed were are second to none.

Some of Swami Vivekananda’s quotes very much relevant today’s times are given below:

· “Anything that makes you weak physically, intellectually and spiritually, reject as poison.”
· “Fill the brain with high thoughts, highest ideals, place them day and night before you, and out of that will come great work.”

· “Like me or hate me, both are in my favor. If you like me I am in your heart, if you hate me I am in your mind.”
· “Who is helping you, don’t forget them. Who is loving you, don’t hate them. Who is believing you, don’t cheat them.”
