AHMEDABAD: Don’t be surprised if you see Narendra Modi-kite entangled with a Rahul Gandhi-kite in the skies, this Uttarayan. The political war between Congress and BJP will also be seen in the skies this time around. With upcoming assembly elections in the state, the political blitzkrieg is not just visible in the form of hoardings, flyers and social media ads; but also on kites.
It is interesting to see how the plethora of colourful kites have been carefully tucked away on shelves while what hangs outside shops is the ones printed with photographs of political leaders, popular figures and film stars – including PM Narendra Modi, PAAS convener, Hardik Patel; Uttar Pradesh CM, Yogi Adityanath; Congress vice president, Rahul Gandhi and even Bollywood actor, Salman Khan. “What grabs attention is what sells, isn’t it,” quipped an old man in Kalupur’s kite market in Ahmedabad.
“While Modi-kites have been a common sight in the last few years, this time around, even ‘Rahul Gandhi-kites’ will soar the sky. In fact, Rahul Gandhi kites have been made for the first time ever,” said Mujib Pathan, a kite trader.
“Modi kites were bound to be there as they’ve been a major hit over the years. This time, we’ve come up with Rahul Kites and we hope the demand will be good for these too,” said Salim Rasoolbhai, a kite-trader in Kalupur tower.
These wholesalers tend to get regular bulk orders for manufacturing branded kites, including those from political parties. “These kites have been much in demand over the years. It is purely due to the popularity and demand that we’ve got them made. We have even got Yogi-kites and Hardik-kites this time around,” said Brijesh Dani, a wholesale trader of kites near Kalupur Tower.
Election is usually the time when a number of political parties place bulk orders for preparing kites, printed with logos of the respective party.
