Today’s auspicious day, Dhanteras has set off the 5-day festive celebrations for Diwali. And, for several Hindu families, this also marks as the onset of good fortune and divine permission to get going with propitious celebrations in the household, like marriage.
The term ‘Dhanteras’ is an amalgamation of two parts- ‘Dhan’ which means money (in Hindi) and the word ‘teera’, which means thirteen day of the Kartik Maas. Thus, on the day of Dhanteras, Hindu Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped, who is the Goddess of wealth.
On this day many Hindu families, celebrate the occasion by purchasing new utensils, gold/silver. But this has nothing to do with Goddess Laxmi, in fact, it is believed that Lord Kubera blesses the family and doubles the happiness of what is bought or purchased on this day. However, there is no theoretical evidence to prove this theory.
Like Goddess Lakshmi and Ganesha are worshipped on Diwali, on Dhanteras Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped with Lord Kubera, who is the god of wealth. However, it is very important that they are worshipped with correct rituals and during the auspicious muhurat.
