Miss World 2015 crowning snafu after Steve Harvey’s faux pas

What the hell just happened here!

That’s exactly what everyone was wondering on Sunday night after watching the farcical final moments of Miss Universe 2015.

Initially, the host Steve Harvey made it crystal clear that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez was the pageant winner. The announcement was followed by hugs, flowers, cheers, a standing ovation and everything expected from such a joyous moment. But when Steve had another announcement, Things quickly took another turn.

“Okay folks, I have to apologize. The first runner-up is Colombia,” he again announced as the camera moved to finalists Miss USA and Miss Philippines. In plain English, Miss Universe 2015 is now actually Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach!

It was undoubtedly disagreeable, the camera crews, audience and host didn’t know what to do. But anyway the show carried on. “Listen, folks, let me just take control of this. This is exactly what’s on the card,” Harvey announced while holding up the results. “I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake. It is my mistake.”

He continued while trying to hold back tears, “Please don’t hold it against the ladies. We feel so badly, but it’s been a great night.”
Steve Harvey asked forgiveness to the pageant winner Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach after initially declaring her the runner-up and shared a photo of himself backstage at Sunday’s Miss Universe pageant.

‘I had the chance to apologize to Miss Philippines and I’m thankful,’ wrote Harvey next to the photo, which showed him holding Miss Philippines’ hands and speaking with her as she wore her new crown.

He also wrote that he atoned to Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez, who he announced as the winner on live TV before acknowledging his gaffe and having to watch as her crown was removed and handed over to Miss Philippines.

It was an uneasy juncture for Harvey, who was seen gambling and having drinks at a Las Vegas casino before the competition finals on Sunday. Sources informed that Harvey had a few drinks and didn’t win or lose big.’

Harvey’s embarrassing faux pas in naming the correct winner at the beauty pageant was a little too perfect for some viewers, who started crying foul and claiming the whole thing as a well-orchestrated publicity stunt. Harvey’s blooper would help put the long-running beauty pageant back on the map, and also improve the Family Feud host’s own career. It was a blunder made for the age of 24/7 social media, Twitter, GIFs, Vines. The blunder went viral as soon as it was made.

Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez, however, remained amiable and good-natured after this debacle, saying with commendable composure during a backstage interview that ‘everything happens for a reason.’

Dabbing her eyes with a napkin, the first Miss Universe 2015 runner-up told she was happy with all she had accomplished and thanked her supporters for voting for her.
