BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (NEWS10) – It’s not often you’ll catch a high school football game on a Monday.
Gloversville and Ballston Spa were supposed to play Friday but they were forced to reschedule after two confirmed cases of the Coxsackievirus.
Gloversville students were loading the bus Friday afternoon and headed to Ballston Spa when the coach got a call informing him that one of the players and a member of the coaching staff had confirmed cases of Coxsackievirus, a highly contagious infection.
“Our kids were bummed getting off the bus,” Mike DeMagistris, the Athletic Director at Gloversville High School, said. “They wanted to go play and I would imagine Ballston Spa was too because it’s Friday night. It’s Friday night lights and we wanted to play football.”
Both DeMagistris and the Superintendent of Ballston Spa Schools Ken Slentz says the districts agreed to play it safe and postpone the game.
“We know enough about the virus that it is contagious. It is painful and something that we simply did not want to expose our student body to,” Slentz said.
The virus can affect people of all ages, causing fevers, headaches, muscle aches, and small blisters to appear on the feet, hands, and mouth.
“First thing we did was got our kids off the bus have them take all their cloth equipment home to be washed,” DeMagistris said. “At that point, our varsity coaches and our JV coaches disinfected everything we possibly could from footballs to our football helmets and shoulder pads. The locker room and the high school was also disinfected.”
DeMagistris says the first thing he did this morning was head to Albany to buy new mouth guards and water bottles.
Before they play Monday night, two things need to happen. The district must ensure that no additional cases have been reported in Gloversville schools K-12. The county health department must also confirm that a thorough disinfection process is complete.
“I applaud our coaches and our custodians. It was a long weekend but we’re ready to go we want to get things back to normal as soon as possible.”
The game was rescheduled for 6 p.m.
