MONROE COUNTY, Mississippi — A 13-year-old girl died at a hospital Sunday night after she was shot by her 9-year-old brother during an argument over a video game, according to reports.
Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell tells WCBI that the boy shot his sister in the head with a .25 caliber handgun when she refused to give him the controller to the game system.
The incident occurred Saturday afternoon, WTVA reports.
Investigators say they’re unsure how the boy gained access to the handgun, the Clarion Ledger reports.
“He’s just 9. I assume he’s seen this on video games or TV,” Cantrell tells the Clarion Ledger. “I don’t know if he knew exactly what this would do. I can’t answer that. I do know it’s a tragedy.”
Cantrell also tells the Clarion Ledger he’s unsure what charges might be filed in the case, which remains under investigation.
“This is all new ground for us, we’ve never dealt with a kid shooting a kid at age 9,” Cantrell says.
“That’s why I’m not too fast to say anything because there are juveniles involved. We want to do what’s right and we’re going to get it right.”
